As a makeup enthusiast, I’ve always been a fan of using makeup sponges to apply my foundation and concealer. They’re convenient, easy to use, and can help create a smooth, flawless finish. However, I recently had an experience that has made me think twice about using makeup sponges..
How I Found Out My Makeup Sponge was Growing Mold
I first came across a TikTok where the girl was saying she found mold on her makeup sponge. I wish I could find the original video to link it.. But I didn’t really think twice, until.. I took a deeper look at my makeup sponge and noticed a sort of greenish color on my makeup sponge, and upon closer inspection, I found that it had grown mold.. I mean what else could that green color be? I don’t use any green makeup.. Gross, right? Yeah, I thought the same.
I was shocked and disgusted to find that my makeup sponge, something I use on a daily basis, had become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. And I’m not the only one – I’ve heard of numerous other people experiencing similar issues with their makeup sponges on TikTok!
So, What Can You Do to Avoid Getting a Moldy Makeup Sponge?
The first thing is to replace your sponge regularly. Most makeup sponges should be replaced every few months, depending on how frequently you use them. It’s also important to clean your sponges regularly to prevent the buildup of bacteria and germs. This is something I definitely need to work on! You can do this by using a mild soap, baby shampoo, or brush cleaner and rinsing the sponge thoroughly. I like using this Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo because it’s gentle enough for my sensitive skin but thoroughly gets rid of all the makeup and dirt on my makeup sponge!
It’s also a good idea to avoid using makeup sponges that have become visibly dirty or damaged, as these can harbor even more bacteria and potentially cause skin irritation or infections. And breakouts!!
In conclusion, while makeup sponges can be a convenient tool in your makeup routine, it’s important to be aware of the potential for bacteria and mold growth. Make sure to regularly replace and clean your sponges to avoid any unpleasant surprises, like I had.. Yikes!!
