Preparing for rhinoplasty surgery can be both exciting and overwhelming, trust me I know!! The anticipation of a new look can be thrilling, but the idea of going through surgery and recovery can also be daunting, especially if you’ve never been put under anesthesia before (eeek! this is currently my situation). However, with the right preparation and resources, the recovery process can be much smoother and more comfy. In this blog post, we will go over the must-have items for rhinoplasty recovery, from the perspective of someone who is preparing for her own rhinoplasty!! 🙂 I’m currently in a WhatsApp group chat with a bunch of lovely people who have already gotten their rhinoplasty or are also preparing for their rhinoplasty, so they’ve helped me come up with the list!

First, a little information about my rhinoplasty. I’ll be getting an asian rhinoplasty also considered an ethnic rhinoplasty, asian nose job, or asian nose surgery. It’s considered to be a little more complicated from what my surgeon has told me. He told me that rib cartilage may be needed to sculpt the nose I want. I don’t know if it’s true with every surgeon but with mine, since it is more complicated, it did cost more than a regular rhinoplasty, so keep that in mind if you’re also interested in an asian rhinoplasty, or asian nose job. My main concern was making the base smaller, probably through an alarplasty. After doing more research, I also wanted a slight slope with a supratip break, a more defined tip, and a slimmer bridge. This is what I think I want hahaha but I will of course, go with what the doctor recommends will fit my face because at the end of the day, he knows best. I’ll know more when I have my actual consultation with my surgeon. I’ll keep you posted on what he recommends! Anyway, let’s get to my must-have items for rhinoplasty recover!

10 Rhinoplasty Recovery Essentials!

1. Throat Spray for Dry Throat from Anesthesia

One of the most common side effects of anesthesia is a dry throat. It can be caused by the drying effects of the anesthesia, the breathing tube used during surgery, and the lack of fluids during the procedure. A throat spray can help alleviate this discomfort and keep your throat moisturized. My surgeon’s assistant told me that throat spray would be a good idea to sooth the throat after surgery, so I made sure to stock up! I want to make sure the recovery is as comfy as possible!!

2. Rhinoplasty Glasses Headband to Keep Pressure off Nose

After your surgery, your nose will be very sensitive, and it’s important to avoid any pressure on it. Rhinoplasty glasses headbands are specially designed to keep the weight of your glasses off your nose and distribute it evenly on your head. This will help prevent any pressure on your nose, which can slow down the healing process. It looks silly but listen, I’m as blind as a bat and contacts are drying for me if worn too long, so this is a necessity. If you see me wearing this in public, kindly mind your business lolol just kidding but seriously, no pics pls. 😂

3. Funny Adult Coloring Book for Entertainment

Recovery from rhinoplasty can be boring and tedious, but it doesn’t have to be. Having an entertaining activity, like a funny adult coloring book, can make a huge difference in your mood and keep you occupied while you’re resting. The distraction of coloring can also help reduce stress and anxiety. I got this cute “dog shaming” coloring book from Amazon. I’m obsessed!! Don’t forget the colored pencils too hehe.

4. Blow Up Travel Neck Pillow to Sleep Elevated

Sleeping elevated is crucial for proper healing after rhinoplasty. A blow-up travel neck pillow can be a great option because it’s easy to adjust the height, and it’s compact enough to take with you wherever you go. Plus, it’s much more comfortable than stacking regular pillows. I’m usually a stomach sleeper so learning to sleep on my back is going to be tough, but for the nose, I will do whatever it takes lolol and this travel neck pillow will make it so much easier!!

5. Throat Lozenges to Soothe Throat

In addition to the throat spray, throat lozenges can also be very helpful in soothing a dry and sore throat. Make sure to choose lozenges that are safe for your recovery and avoid any flavors that may irritate your throat. It’s like candy but it’s also good for you or your throat!!

6. Bromelaine to Help with Bruising and Swelling

Bromelaine is an enzyme found in pineapples that can help reduce inflammation and swelling. It’s often used as a natural supplement to speed up the healing process after surgery. Make sure to consult with your doctor before taking any supplements. My surgeon told me to take it one day before surgery and then after, but double check with your surgeon for their recommendations. This is the one that I bought for my recovery.

7. Arnica Pills to Help with Bruising and Swelling

Arnica pills are a homeopathic remedy that can also help reduce bruising and swelling. They’re often recommended by plastic surgeons for post-surgical recovery. Again, make sure to consult with your doctor before taking any supplements. Similar to the bromelaine tablets, my surgeon told me to take it one day before surgery and then after, but double check with your surgeon for their recommendations.

8. Zip Up Hoodies to Avoid Pulling Anything over Nose

After your surgery, you’ll want to avoid any clothing that may pull or rub against your new beautiful nose. Zip-up hoodies are a great option because they’re easy to put on and take off without disturbing your nose. Plus, they’re comfortable and versatile. I didn’t realize that most of my hoodies were pullover hahaha so I stocked up on so many basic zip up hoodies for this recovery.

9. Ice Roller for Face Swelling

Swelling is a common side effect of rhinoplasty, and it can take a looong time to fully resolve. An ice roller can help reduce swelling in your face and alleviate discomfort. Just make sure to use it gently and avoid any pressure on your nose. Of course, ice packs are a great item to have on hand as well!!

10. Aquaphor for Dry Lips

In addition to the other recovery essentials, it’s also important to take care of your lips after rhinoplasty surgery. The anesthesia, medications, and the surgery itself can cause dryness and chapping of the lips. Aquaphor is a favorite of mine and is a great product for moisturizing and protecting your lips during the recovery process. It’s a gentle, fragrance-free ointment that creates a barrier to lock in moisture and promote healing. Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor to your lips as often as needed to keep them soft and hydrated.

In conclusion, preparing for a rhinoplasty can be stressful, but having the right resources can make a big difference. These items are essential for a comfortable and successful recovery. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that you’re not alone. Consider joining a support group like a rhinoplasty Facebook group or a rhinoplasty WhatsApp chat to connect with others going through a similar experience. It’s been super helpful for me as I prepare for my upcoming rhinoplasty! I hope this list is helpful for you whether you’re researching, preparing, or currently recovering from your rhinoplasty!!
