8 Effective Ways to Keep Your Friendships Strong as an Adult

As we grow older, it can become more difficult to maintain the friendships that we’ve formed throughout our lives. Work, family obligations, and other responsibilities can make it hard to find the time to connect with our friends. Ugh, adulting is hard lol. However, it’s important to prioritize these relationships, as they can provide us with emotional support, fun memories, and a sense of belonging. In this blog post, I’ll go over 8 effective ways to keep your friendships strong as an adult!!

1. Schedule regular get-togethers

One of the best ways to maintain your friendships is to schedule regular get-togethers. In person get-togethers can be difficult for my friendships because some of my closest friends are thousands of miles away unfortunately :/ For long distance friendships, schedule FaceTime or phone call ‘get-togethers’! Whether it’s a weekly phone call or a monthly brunch, having a standing date on the calendar can make it easier to stay connected with everyone’s busy schedules. Plus, it gives you something to look forward to!

2. Stay in touch digitally

Thanks to technology, it’s easier than ever to stay in touch with friends who live far away. Use social media, texting, or FaceTime to catch up on eachothers’ lives. Even a quick text or message can show that you’re thinking of them. My friends and I are always sending each other funny memes or TikTok videos that remind us of each other hahaha.

3. Make time for one-on-one hangouts

While group hangouts can be fun, make sure you set aside time for one-on-one hangouts with each of your friends as well. This can help deepen the friendship and strengthen the bond between you two.

4. Celebrate milestones and special occasions

When your friend achieves something great or has a special occasion, make an effort to celebrate it with them! Whether it’s a birthday, job promotion, or other milestone, this can help show your support and strengthen your relationship. This was something that I had to work on because growing up, birthdays weren’t that big of a deal in my family so I thought that’s how birthdays were for with other people. I’ve learned that birthdays are extremely special to some people, so now I make sure to reach out to my friends on their birthdays!

5. Try new things together

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Trying new activities or experiences together can help create shared memories and strengthen your friendship. Whether it’s starting a book club, going to a new networking event, or trying a new workout class, stepping out of your comfort zone together can be a fun way to bond.

It’s important to be there for your friends during tough times. Whether they’re going through a breakup, job loss, or other difficult situation, make an effort to support them and be there to listen.

In order to maintain a strong friendship, it’s important to be reliable and dependable. Show up on time for plans, follow through on commitments, and be there for your friends when they need you. Don’t be flaky!! I used to be a flaky friend and that was terrible.. I’ve learned that it’s crucial that you are reliable! This can help build trust and strengthen your relationship.
