Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery that can help improve the appearance and function of your nose. I’m getting what is considered an asian rhinoplasty, or asian nose job. Due to the shape and skin thickness of my nose, my surgeon called it an ethnic rhinoplasty and determined that it is a more complex rhinoplasty case. Because it is more complicated, the price was higher than a regular rhinoplasty. If you’re considering getting a rhinoplasty, there are several things you should keep in mind before scheduling your procedure. Here are ten tips from a girl who’s currently preparing for her own asian rhinoplasty:
1. Rhinoplasty swelling!
Swelling after your rhinoplasty can last for a year or longer, especially if you have thick skin. While most of the swelling will subside within a few months, it’s important to be patient and give your nose time to heal fully. Trust the process!
2. Rhinoplasty risks
There are risks associated with rhinoplasty, just like with any surgery. It’s important to do your research and choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience performing rhinoplasty.
3. Limit activities that raise blood pressure
You’ll need to avoid anything that raises your blood pressure for at least three months after surgery. This includes strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and even bending over.
4. No sunglasses or glasses
You won’t be able to wear sunglasses or regular glasses for a while after surgery. My surgeon told me I have to wait at least six months after surgery to wear sunglasses or glasses to ensure optimal healing. If you need glasses to see like me, you’ll need to purchase special glasses that don’t put any pressure on your nose, like a glasses headband. It looks silly, I know, but listennn, if it protects my new nose, I’m with it hahaha.
5. You’ll have to sleep on your back elevated
You’ll have to sleep elevated on your back for a while to reduce swelling and promote healing. This can be uncomfortable at first, but it’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions for the best results. Ugh, this one will be especially tough for stomach sleepers like me.. but you gotta do what you gotta do for that nose!! Use an inflatable travel neck pillow to help make it more comfy. Or if you want to splurge a little, invest in a wedge pillow!
6. Realistic expectations
It’s important to have realistic expectations for your rhinoplasty results. Your nose may not look exactly like the picture you have in your head, but your surgeon will work with you to create a natural-looking and proportionate result. I have ideas of what I want my new nose to look like but I’m definitely going to trust my surgeon on what he thinks will best suit my face.
7. You’ll need to take time off of work or school
You’ll need to take time off from work or school to recover from your surgery. The amount of time needed will depend on the extent of your surgery and how quickly you heal. Since my surgery is out of the country and my surgeon needs me to stay a week after surgery to monitor me, I needed to take 2 weeks off of work, so that’s something to keep in mind!
8. Rhinoplasty discomfort
You may experience some pain and discomfort after surgery. Your surgeon should prescribe pain medication to help manage these symptoms. The girls in my rhinoplasty WhatsApp group told me that the rhinoplasty recovery isn’t necessary per say, but more uncomfortable. I will keep you posted on this after I get my rhinoplasty!
9. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and smoking
My surgeon told me that I have to stop drinking alcohol and caffeine a week before surgery and for 2 months after surgery. Of course, double check with your doctor to see what they recommend for you. I don’t smoke but if you do, it’s important to avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke before and after surgery. Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications!
10. Follow your surgeon’s instructions!
These are just some tips that I have picked up from my surgeon and fellow rhinoplasty friends from the rhinoplasty online groups.. Always follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery! This includes avoiding certain foods and activities, keeping your nose clean, and attending follow-up appointments.
In conclusion, rhinoplasty can be a life-changing procedure that can boost your confidence and improve your quality of life. However, it’s important to be prepared and informed before undergoing any surgery. By keeping these tips in mind, I hope you can have a safe and successful rhinoplasty experience 🙂
